Warren Invite –
We planned to put together our first solid look at the Wildcats varsity at Warren.  They did not disappoint.  The Cats finished a solid 4th place only 4 pts out of 3rd.  Rolling Meadows ran away with the meet with 44 points, followed by host Warren with 92, and Grayslake Central with 131.  The Cats ran a very smart race moving up throughout, even with a shoe issue along the way.  Jordy Arriaga lost his shoe in the first half mile, went back and retied it.  He came out of that pitstop in the 90’s and was able to move up all the way to 28th place.  Nick Modlin ran the best race of his career finishing in 9th place with a time of 15:42.  Nick just looked so strong moving up and passing people all the way to the finish, including negative splits along the way.  Sophomore Bruce Ferraro made the jump we were all hoping for, followed in Nick’s shadow moving up to 13th and finishing in a career best 15:48, a 30 second improvement from two weeks ago.  Terrence Moran and Edwin Arteaga continue to improve weekly, moving up to 47th and 50th places respectively in 16:35 and 16:36.  Another Cat who is making strong improvements is Jose Ortiz running a personal best 16:47 Saturday.  Finally, Alfonso Figueroa improved to 17:28 another 25 second personal best thanks to the flat fast course at Warren.  The Frosh-Soph made solid improvements also finishing in 7th place.

Dual vs. Buffalo Grove – The Cats went into Willowstream Park to the face Top 20 rated Bison.  The Cats ran with the Bison for most of the first mile and then had them pull away over the last two miles.  The Cats went down 19-36 being able to put 4 runners ahead of BG’s 5th man.

Lake Park Invite –
The Cats continue to improve upon a strong start this season.  The Cats finished 11th in the Varsity race without their two sophomores in the lineup.  The Cats were led by Jordy Arriaga who finished 19th in 15:48.  He was followed by Nick Modlin (16:14 – 34th), Terrence Moran (16:42 – 51st),  Jose Ortiz (17:31 – 91st) and Alfonso Figueroa (17:44 – 102nd).  The meet continues to be one of the premier meets of the weekend, with many solid teams running strong races.  On the Frosh-Soph level, the Cats tied for 2nd place with Downers Grove North, but lost the tiebreaker on the 6th man.  The Cats scored 81 points behind Hersey’s 44.  The Cats were led by Sophomore Bruce Ferraro (10:15 – 3rd) and Edwin Arteaga (10:44 – 9th) who continue to make strong improvements.  The FS were then followed by three strong freshman Edwin Arteaga (20th – 10:57), Cole Dammeier (21st – 10:58), and Brian Hernandez (28th – 11:04) in the two mile race.

Quad @ Hoffman Estates - We rescheduled our Dual meet with Barrington as a Quad with Hersey and Hoffman Estates and ran the meet on a very fast course at Barrington Pond.  The Cats were defeated by Barrington 19-38, and Hersey 25-30, but defeated Hoffman Estates 25-30.  The Cats were leading Hersey through 2 miles but a strong push by Hersey helped them edge the Cats.  The Cats were lead by Jordy Arriaga finishing 5th with a time of 16:13 over the 3.1 mile course.  Nick Modlin hung tough with the front runners closing in on Jordi over the last mile finishing in 17:17.  The top two Hersey runners were between us.  Sophomore Bruce Ferraro ran only his second varsity race and finished in a personal best 16:39, followed by our other sophomore Edwin Arteaga (17:06).  The top five were rounded out by Terrance Moran in 17:17.  This was a very encouraging way to start the season.

3rd Place in the 100 Mile Redeye Team Relay
Congratulations to the Redeye Relay team "Got to Get Them All", which finished an impressive 3rd place overall out of 64 teams. The team covered the 100 miles in 11:32:08 which works out to an average of 6:55.2 per mile.  It was a great team building experience!!.  The guys were already talking about how we are going to do next year. Team members included Jose Ortiz, Nick Modlin, Chris Olszewski, Alfonso Figueora, Terrence Moran, Brian Hernandez, Edwin Arteaga, Edwin Hernandez and Jordy Arriaga

The season officially begins on Wednesday, August 10th @ 7:00 am.  Anyone interested in competing for Boys Cross Country team should expect to attend.

The summer has been very productive with a solid group of runners working together.  We have built a strong group of young runners who are excited to start the season.  We are looking forward to getting the whole team together as the season begins.

Newcomers are always welcome!! As a reminder, please have your parent permits and physicals completed when you arrive. If you don't have the paperwork, please contact me as soon as possible. All incoming freshman are required to have a physical in order to enter Wheeling HS, so all that you need is a parent permit which I can supply on the first day of practice. All ability levels are welcome!!   Track athletes who are not in a fall sport please get involved, we already have 6 sprinters committed to getting stronger and faster by participating in cross country. Everyone runs in every competition, no one is left out.

We will be breaking up the team into at least 3 training groups. Each athlete will be placed in a group based on their ability level and how much training they have accomplished over the summer. For freshman and other newcomers, we start athletes at a low mileage level and build them up based on what they can handle. Too many freshman expect to be sent on an 8 mile run their first day of practice. That does not happen!!

Wheeling Cross Country has had a tradition of success for many years. It is our goal to maintain this level of success. We expect our athletes to be dedicated and committed to becoming better athletes, students and members of our community. Success does not come easy, but for those who are willing to put in the time they will reap the benefits of success.
