Kristin Stoudt Hill - Athletics

Kristin Stoudt Hill was an outstanding swimmer at Wheeling High School. At the time of her induction into the Wheeling Athletic Hall of Fame, she held eight school records in swimming. Kristin was a five-time I.H.S.A. state champion. She was a state champion in the 100-yard butterfly in 1985, 1986, and 1987; and the 100-yard freestyle champion in 1986 and 1987. She is the only swimmer in the history of the I.H.S.A. to win the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle in the same year, a feat Kristin accomplished twice. In 1986 she was featured in Sports Illustrated “Faces in the Crowd,” and was the national record holder in the 100-yard butterfly. Both the Chicago Tribune and Illinois Swim Coaches Association also named Kristin the 1988 “Swimmer of the Year”.
Keith Vernon - Friend of Athletics

Keith Vernon was a great friend to Wheeling athletics. For many years, Keith was a fixture at Wheeling High School athletic events. Keith served as the official clock operator for the Wheeling football games from 1965 through 2001. He was also the official scorer for Wheeling basketball from 1965 through 2002. Keith further served as a volunteer girls' track and field coach, and also served as a timer for many of Wheeling's meets. In 1989, Keith was inducted into the Illinois High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as a “Friend of Basketball.”
Mark Newman - Athletics

Mark Newman was one of the first great athletes to attend Wheeling High School. Mark excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He started on all three teams in the first two years of Wheeling's existence. In 1966, Mark was named to the All-Conference baseball team. Mark earned a scholarship to play baseball at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and played on their 1969 College World Series team. When his playing career ended, Mark served as an assistant baseball coach at Southern Illinois and later was the head baseball coach at Old Dominion. Since 1989, Mark has worked for the New York Yankees. He was instrumental in building the Yankees teams that won the 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2000 World Series Championships. At the time of his induction into the Wheeling Athletic Hall of Fame, Mark was the Senior VP for baseball operations for the Yankees.
Bob Schulze - Coach

Bob Schulze was a pioneer at Wheeling High School. He started his career the first year Wheeling opened, retiring in 1992 after 28 years as a teacher and coach. As a coach, Bob was involved in football, baseball, golf, and wrestling. While Bob excelled as a coach in all sports, it was in wrestling that he made his biggest contribution. In his tenure as the head wrestling coach at Wheeling, he coached two MSL divisional championship teams and two I.H.S.A. regional championship teams. Bob also coached one MSL conference championship team and one I.H.S.A. sectional championship team. Coach Schulze had 13 MSL individual champions and 14 I.H.S.A. individual state qualifiers. Besides his coaching accomplishments, Bob will be most remembered for his devotion and connection to the students at Wheeling High School, including his own three sons who played sports and graduated from Wheeling High School. Bob passed away in May 2007, but his legacy will always live on at Wheeling High School.
Jim Nagel - Coach

Jim Nagel helped build the dynasty that was Wheeling cross country and track in the 1980's. As the long-time coach of both boys' and girls' cross-country programs, Jim led his teams to unparalled success. Coach Nagel's girls' teams won I.H.S.A. State Cross Country titles in 1979, 1983, 1984, and 1986; and finished second in State for 1981. His boys' team finished third in the 1984 I.H.S.A. State Cross Country meet. In track and field, Jim's teams won multiple MSL and divisional championships, both indoor and outdoor. Jim was named the Girls' Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1981, 1983, 1984, and 1986. Also in 1986, Illinois Runners Magazine selected Jim as the Distance Coach of the Year. In addition to these accomplishments, Coach Nagel is also credited with starting the Wildcat Cross Country Invite, the MSL Indoor Track Meet, and the Wildcat Relays.
