Geography and history are fields of study that explain the earth and how humans in the past have lived and worked on it. The field of geography is helps explain what the earth is like. It helps explain where events occured and why they occured there. Geography is generally organized into five themes. They are location (where a place is), place (physical characteristics), human/environmental interaction (how people use the land), movement (how people and places are linked together), and regions (areas of the world). Another important part of studying geography and history is the land and its resources. The surface of the land, such as mountains, plains, and waterways, have a big effect on how people live. Climate factors affect homes, clothing, and food production. Natural resources help determine where people settle and build towns. To record the study of the land and people, the field of history is very important. Groups of people first passed on information about their past through legends, usually in the form of telling stories or singing songs. As people developed alphabets, written history recorded these legends. Archeologists work with artifacts to determine whether or not legends are historically accurate. It is easy to see how important the fields of geography and history are in helping humans understand the land and how it has affected them through the years.
