FirstSearch Directions


FirstSearch is an online database of magazine and journal articles. 

Instructions

Click here to link to log-in screen:  FirstSearch

Type in authorization and password:  consult district password page

Under searching tab, Advanced Search should be selected.

If it is NOT:ÊÊUnder yellow box, look for:  Jump to Advanced Search

ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊClick on:              Triangle at right of ÔSearch in databaseÕ box

ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊSelect:                 PerAbs

 

Type in search term(s).  Use Boolean terms (AND, OR, NOT) as needed.

Scroll down and click:                 ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊBox where it says Full TextÊÊÊ

Click on box that says:                 ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊSearch

A list of articles will appear.  Read the titles and select one you would like to read.

To read the article, look under the name of the article you chose,
and click where it says on of the following:


ÊÊ ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊOR:ÊÊÊÊÊ

Choose: ÊHTML does not show charts and graphs, but every computer can view it
ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊPDF shows charts and graphs, but the computer needs to have Adobe Acrobat Reader to view it

You can copy what you need into a word processing document. You might want to email it to yourself.   

MAKE SURE YOU RECORD THE BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION.

To get back to the list, click:         ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊBack button in the top tool bar



When done looking at the articles, look at the yellow bar.  It lists more full-text databases:

ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊ ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊ

To repeat your search with one of those databases, just click on the name in the bar.

Note:  ECO usually has been the least helpful of the 4 for typical topics students choose, but try them all.
