Excel: Creating a Chart/Graph of one column of data

  1. Open an EXCEL document.
  2. Select the data that you will be using for the chart/graph (do not include any headings) (see figure 1).
  3. From the menu bar, go to Insert - Chart.
  4. Under Chart type, choose the kind of chart/graph you want.
  5. Under Chart sub-type, choose that kind of chart/graph.
  6. Click the blue NEXT button.
  7. At the top of this window, click the Series tab to place the labels for the data in the chart/graph.
  8. Click the up arrow next to the blank field for Category Labels. The window will become narrow (see figure 2).
  9. Select the data for the labels of the Excel chart/graph (see figure 3).
  10. Click again on the down arrow of the Chart Source Data window to expand it.
  11. Click the blue NEXT button.
  12. type a name for the chart/graph in the Chart title box.
  13. Click the blue NEXT button.
  14. Choose whether to place the graph on its own page (click the button next to As new sheet) or as part of the page with the graph data (click the button next to As object in).
  15. Click the blue FINISH button. The chart/graph should appear in your document.
  16. To move the chart/graph, click in the white area of the chart/graph and drag it.
  17. To change a color of an item (bar, slice, etc.) in the graph, click once on the item to select it, and then double click to open the Format Data window. Click on the Colors and Lines tab. If all of the data is the same color and you want to vary the colors, click on the Options tab and check the box next to Vary colors by slice (point).
  18. If your table has more than one column of data, you will need to enter the values for the series after step 8 above. Click on an item in the Series window (see figure 4) and then type its label name in the Name window. In this example, the series names are the names of the values of the bars.
