Turning on Readability in Microsoft Word

1. Open a Word document.

2. Click on
Word -- Preferences.

3. Click on Spelling and Grammar. Then check the box that says Show readability statistics. Click OK in the bottom right corner.

Note: Students will need to do this again at the beginning of each school year.

4. To use the readability feature, highlight the material for which you want a readability score. Make sure you leave out your title and heading.

Click on Tools -- Spelling and Grammar

5. After the spelling check and grammar check are finished, a message will appear asking if you want to check the rest of the document. Answer No.

The readability box will appear. The grade level is the last item listed.
