The start time for Prospect and Wheeling high school graduation ceremonies on Sunday, May 27 has been moved to 10 a.m. due to the predicted extreme heat.
The time change only impacts Prospect and Wheeling high schools, which have outdoor graduations.
After consulting with municipal partners, District 214 administrators determined it would be safer for students, who will be on the turf field, and families watching from the stadium stands if the start time is moved earlier in the day, when the forecast is expected to be cooler. Moving the ceremony to the schools’ fieldhouses, which are not air-conditioned, would limit attendance.
“We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but safety remains a key priority,” said District 214 spokesperson Jennifer Delgado.
Attendees are encouraged to take the proper precautions given the heat and should note that bottled water is allowed. In addition, Prospect and Wheeling high schools will be open, with designated areas to view the ceremony live on television screens from inside.
